Sungkai is a small town located between Bidor and Trolak. The town was originally populated by Malays, who were the descendant of Sumatran refugees from Indonesia (Dutch colony). Later in 19th century, during the height of tin mining industry, large number of Chinese immigrant arrived. The town name 'Sungkai' were originated from the local tree named "Sesungkai" which is habitat along side of sungkai river, another story was came from an old Chinese word for 'Chicken Wood'. The town built its first railway station in 1894 during the British colonial time for transporting tin mine. The first proper school was built in 1900.
